Today Botallack Mine looks picturesque, but this was a hostile environment in which to work. This mine was over 1,000ft deep and went a considerable distance out to sea. The left-hand engine house contained a pumping engine. The other housed a winding engine fot the inclined Boscawen Diagonal Shaft. On the 18th April 1863 the chain broke, killing eight men and a boy. The mine closed in 1895.
