This cottage in Oxfordshire, with the householder leaning proprietorialy on the fence looking out on her garden, typified country living for a significant proportion of the population in the late Victorian age. The cottage appears isolated with plenty of land for growing vegetables. The building is a conglomeration of building styles and materials, clearly having been built and altered without the aid of plans. Its appearance is somewhat ramshackle and it almost certainly had no power, water or drainage facilities.
