During World War I nitroglycerine was purified at a site in Silvertown, East London. On 19th January 1917 an explosion in the factory caused the deaths of 16 workers and 53 residents in this heavily built-up district. In addition to the fatalities nearly 400 people were injured, 72 seriously, while the damage cost in the region of £2.5 million.
