New photographs added

Over the last year we've been continuing to digitize and catalogue the Bedford Lemere & Co collection and now even more of their fantastic images can be seen here.

Bedford Lemere & Co were the leading English firm of architectural photographers between 1870 and 1930, pioneering the photography of new buildings. Their client list was vast; they worked for anyone who needed architectural photography. Property companies, estate agents, decorators and businesses were all keen to promote their services through photographs, while many rich house-owners wanted a visual souvenir of their beautiful new homes.

The firm's work reflects the enormous social, economic and technological changes in England during this time, including the arrival of the cinema and the introduction of the motor car.

The collection includes 21,800 large-format glass negatives, around 3,000 prints and some photographic albums. We care for it in our archive in Swindon. We also hold some of the firm's administrative records, known as 'day books', which give a unique insight into the company's activities.

We're putting on a new exhibition displaying the work of Bedford Lemere and Co. It's on between January and May 2012, at the Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight, Wirral.
